Before attending a Mountain Leader training course, candidates need to register with Mountain Training (click here to register) and have completed at least 20 Quality Mountain Days (further details of what a QMD is can be found here) which have been recorded on the DLOG system (further details of how to use DLOG can be found here). Further details regarding the Mountain Training pre-requirements for attending the Summer ML training course can be found here.
With the exception of the middle weekend which involves an overnight remote camp, the 1st and 3rd weekends are non-residential and it is the responsibility of candidates to arrange their own accommodation and meals.
Weekend 1 is based in the High Peak alongside the Snake Pass, not far from the Hope Valley and is non -residential. This weekend acts as an introduction to the Mountain Leader training course with a focus on navigation
Weekend 2 is based in the southern area of the Lake District  and involves an overnight remote/wild camp. This weekend has a focus in journeying through the mountains alongside expedition skills and night navigation.
Weekend 3 is based in Eryri around the Ogwen Valley/Llanberis Pass and is non-residential. The focus for this weekend is around moving over steep and rocky ground and unplanned use of a rope.
Alongside the syllabus areas outlined above there are a range of theoretical sessions including mountain weather, emergency procedures and risk management etc. Areas such as leadership, group management, decision making and environmental themes are a part of all of the days. The Mountain Leader handbook and syllabus can be downloaded here.
This course is delivered on a 1:6 ratio.
Candidates are responsible for arranging their own transport to/from each of the weekends. There is a BMC 'LiftShare' scheme - details here, and it is common for candidates to arrange lift sharing amongst themselves after the first weekend.
