The Hill and Moorland Leader scheme is designed for those leading hillwalkers in non-mountainous, upland areas of the UK and Ireland and looks at the leadership skills required to confidently lead walking groups in such areas. The award is particularly relevant to teachers, scout and guide leaders, and those involved in supervising Duke of Edinburgh Award expeditions for young people in upland areas of the UK.
Adventure Unlimited is committed to ensuring that everyone has equal opportunity to attend our courses. If you have a particular need that requires extra assistance, please discuss it with us in advance of the course. Further details regarding Mountain Training's reasonable adjustments policy can be found here.
Hill and Moorland Leader Training (3 days total) - £240*
Our three-day Hill and Moorland Leader Training course is based in the High Peak and is designed to give a thorough introduction to the skills required to lead walking groups in moorland terrain. There is a strong focus on the practical skills which leaders of groups need and navigation away from paths is a key part of this. The course commences at 09:00 at Hagg Farm Outdoor Education Centre on the Snake Pass with the first and final day finishing by 17:00. The second day involves night navigation, so has a later finishing time. The course is non-residential and it is the responsibility of candidates to arrange their own accommodation and meals. Practical sessions are supplemented by evening lectures on subjects such as upland weather and emergency procedures. This course is delivered on a 1:6 ratio.
Candidates are responsible for arranging their own transport to/from each of the days (There is a BMC 'LiftShare' scheme - details here).
