Before attending a Mountain Leader assessment course, candidates need to ensure that they have completed at least 40 Quality Mountain Days (further details of what a QMD is can be found here) which have been recorded on the DLOG system (further details of how to use DLOG can be found here), with at least 8 nights camping, of which 4 must be of a remote/wild nature. Candidates must also have completed a 16 hour first aid course which has an element of assessment. Further details regarding the Mountain Training pre-requirements for attending the Summer ML assessment course can be found here.
With the exception of the 2nd long weekend which involves two overnight remote camps, the 1st weekend is non-residential and it is the responsibility of candidates to arrange their own accommodation and meals.
Weekend 1 is based in the High Peak alongside the Snake Pass, not far from the Hope Valley and is non -residential.
Weekend 2 is based in the northern part of the Lake District and involves 2 overnight remote/wild camps.
All aspects of the Mountain Leader syllabus (click here for the Mountain Leader handbook) will be assessed as part of the assessment course.
This course is delivered on a 1:4 ratio.
Candidates are responsible for arranging their own transport to/from each of the weekends. There is a BMC 'LiftShare' scheme - details here, and it is common for candidates to arrange lift sharing amongst themselves after the first weekend.
